Following negative results in 2018–19, coach Bruno Lage led Benfica to their 37th champions title while achieving the league's all-time best second round. From 2021–22 to '22–23, with president Rui Costa, Benfica lost a league cup final for the first time and were third in the league before coach Roger Schmidt led them to their 38th league title and a second consecutive place in the Champions League quarter-finals. From then on, Benfica would only win the 2023 Super Cup and the league cup and super cup in 2025, the year they debuted at the FIFA Club World Cup.
